EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This Fortune 100 organization faced challenges managing fragmented and inconsistent data due to its reliance on multiple Software Asset Management (SAM) tools. Discrepancies, uneven adoption across business divisions, and maintenance costs hindered efficiency. To address these issues and prepare for a major digital transformation program, the organization wanted to standardize its SAM technology on ServiceNow, to gain an accurate and unified view of its entire IT estate.

Since 2021, Anglepoint has been the organization’s trusted SAM partner, managing software assets from its six top-tier publishers. In 2024, this collaboration expanded to include a comprehensive coverage analysis, comparing data collected from ServiceNow and its four other IT Operations and SAM technology. As part of this initiative, Anglepoint also developed a custom data dashboard for seamless consolidation,  integrating nearly 600,000 devices across the estate, highlighting gaps in coverage, technical debt, and optimization opportunities.

This solution has enhanced data quality, improved IT visibility, reduced costs by eliminating redundant technology, and established a reliable foundation for the organization’s ambitious digital transformation plans.

The Challenge

Managing a highly complex IT environment with over half a million employees and global operations, this organization faced significant challenges in tracking IT deployments and usage. Relying on multiple IT Operations and Software Asset Management (SAM) technology resulted in fragmented and inconsistent data, with discrepancies and incomplete information across its systems. Additionally, uneven adoption of these tools across business divisions compounded these issues, while the cost and complexity of maintaining multiple SAM tools added to the burden.

In preparation for a major digital transformation program, the organization recognized the need for accurate, reliable data to underpin its initiatives. Already utilizing ServiceNow for its IT Asset Management capabilities, the organization decided to standardize its SAM technology on that platform to achieve a unified view of its IT estate. To fully leverage this investment, it needed to ensure ServiceNow covered all critical data points across its infrastructure, leaving no gaps.

The Solution

Anglepoint has served as the organization’s SAM partner since 2021, managing assets from its six top-tier software publishers. In 2024, the partnership expanded to include a comprehensive coverage analysis of the organization’s IT environment. This analysis compared data collected by five different IT Operations and SAM technologies: ServiceNow, BigFix, Tanium, vPROPs, and RVTools.

As part of this program, Anglepoint developed a custom dashboard to provide a clear, centralized view of each tool’s performance across the organization’s nearly 600,000 workstations and servers. This dashboard identifies which tools monitor specific IT environments, as well as any areas lacking coverage or containing duplicate data. With this increased software visibility, the Anglepoint team can configure the client’s ServiceNow technology to discover data feeds previously only covered by the outgoing tools. The team is also normalizing data collected from the various sources, ensuring the organization has a precise view of what machines and operating systems have been deployed, and whether they are being used.

Anglepoint collaborated closely with the organization’s in-house software asset management team to identify the primary data sources for the coverage analysis, ensuring the dashboard delivered ITAM metrics and recommendations aligned with the client’s highest strategic priorities.

These metrics indicate how many devices remain solely tracked by legacy technology and pinpoints areas for data quality improvement. The dashboard also provides insights into the organization’s technical debt, detailing the age of machines and operating systems, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and outlining risk remediation plans. Additionally, it includes metrics to streamline user clean-up, enabling the organization to optimize user-based consumption.

Results

  • Improved data quality: Collected and cleaned data from nearly 600,000 workstations and servers.
  • Greater software visibility: Custom dashboard reports on key business metrics, providing a single view of the entire IT estate.
